the obama campaign is saying and what the romney campaign is not. >> a favorite talking point of the obama campaign is mitt romney's economic proposals would simply reinstate the tax cut and deregulation policy that led to the 2008 financial meltdown. two things should be said about this claim. one is it's gone unanswered by the romney camp and the second is it's utterly invalid. the tax cut put in place under president bush in 2001 and 2003 cannot be blamed for the mortgage market collapse that triggered the great recession. in fact, they can be credited with helping the economy out of the recession of 2001, 2002, and with helping overcome the economic damage from hurricane katrina. by the way, that expansion, and the tax revenue it produced were sufficient to drive down the federal budget deficit for 2005 through 2007. this despite massive war spending. as for deregulation, president obama himself said former president bush put more regulations in place than he has at the same time frame. it is true that there is one bit of deregulation regularly blamed by the liberal economists for help

mitt romney is and was last night. i mean, if he was talking, he was speaking last night, he was lying. and look, mitt romney had a good night, but you know, even a, you know, blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then. >> are these dirty attacks, calling mitt romney a liar. is it a good idea for the democrats. we're back with our panel. brian some suggest this is classless to come and attack mitt romney for lying when the president didn't seen prepared and shell shocked and that's the response. he was so shell shocked that mitt romney was lying that he didn't know how to respond. >> and mitt romney's facts were tricky, we don't have time for that. let's include john sununu, romney's surrogate who said that obama is lazy, incompetent. has no idea what's going on. on both sides comments being made and let's not make this one-sided when you're talking about it. >> clayton: is that fair, tammy? >> americans and i think the tea party is a good example of this want to be told the truth. we have impressions of these guys and americans are going to make up their own mind and we know that p

mitt romney rather than talking about his own record. and biden's weird performance was kind of a piece of that technique that they have adopted. i think voters are looking for something deeper from the president now. the burden is on him to show it next week. >> no hint of a second term agenda in biden's -- >> no, not at all. i think he showed president obama that you can be aggressive, you can defend. >> so romney ought to be on notice, he's coming at you? >> right. >> but he also showed us how not to be aggressive at the same time. and one of the dangers is, i got the impression from the last presidential debate that romney was holding back a little bit. that he was really -- >> really? >> that he was a little nice, he left a few zingers on the table because he was dominating. >> but obama is such a cooler customer than biden. biden is all heat and energy and attack. obama is laid-back. i mean, can he really go on the attack like biden? >> i think he can, but i think the danger is he opens the door for romney to be more aggressive in his responses, and i think gov. romney will be mor

before it is for voters to know. we would be talking about mitt romney's loose interpretation of the facts regardless of what the people thought of the pet's performance. his own campaign walked back what romney said about covering people with preexisting conditions in the healthcare plan. >> marjorie wasn't the president lying when he repeatedly said mitt romney would raise taxes five trillion dollars. it will not be near five trillion wasn't that a lie. >> no it is not a lie because romney will not talk about the loop holes. he refuses to walk through the math. paul ryan said i don't have time to deal with that. and voters want the facts and they don't want the spin and verse, they want somebody to show up and walk them through the math. you can see him take a variety of the positions and you don't see paul ryan do it. >> you are following the talking points. that they are big fact liar: amelia don't you think that accounts back fire with the president. he's been so likeable . that could take a tollwith the gutter ball. >> the republicans went through seven stages of grief.

. this is something the romney campaign likes to talk a lot about. reviews generally believe if this vice president joe biden made a mistake last night it was all he framed the administration's response to attacks on libya. this will be revisited that night. jamie: and even before. bill: each party as you can imagine naming their candidates the winner today. the republicans say ryan maintained the upper hand and withstood the biden barrage. here is kentucky senator rand paul. >> i think the president loses some points at least skaoeul lisleast style list likely looking like a cheshire cat back there. >> did romney compete. >> we have massive unemployment? what is the administration doing, what they are doing is not working, what are they going to do differently? >> the obama campaign is cheering joe biden per performance saying he laid out a clear vision for our future. >> in terms of style, joe biden is joe biden. he's authentic and real and straightforward and says what he thinks and what he means and he spoke from a lifetime of experience. and congressman ryan basically spoke that the cue cards

these distractions. and, paul ryan talked about the fact that we're going to get, that he and mitt romney will get 12 million americans back to work. he laid out very specific ideas how they will reform the tax code. how they will reduce spending. we saw vice president biden last night. they have no plans for spending. he misled on benghazi. they have no way to create jobs and talk about how they're going to get americans back to work. he said that numbers are going in the right direction. we created less jobs in the past three months than we did the month before. jon: andrea saul, from the ryan campaign. romney-ryan campaign i should say. thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. and we gave both sides equal time. thank you. >> thank you. jenna: a warning from our nation's defense secretary about a growing threat. what he says are military our military need to do before it's too late >> greater danger facing us in cyberspace goes beyond crime and it goes beyond harrassment. a cyberattack perpetrated by nation-states or violent extremist groups could be as destructive as the terrorist attack on 9/11.

the president and governor romney on russia we want to talk more where we're going. here is how the candidates talk about russia if you will. we're going to roll some sound. >> but he is eager to give russia's president putin the flexibility he desires after the election. [booing] under my administration our friend will see more loyalty and mr. putin will see a little less flexibility and more backbone. >> after all you don't call russia our number one enemy, not al qaeda, russia, unless you're still stuck in a cold war mind warp. [applause] jenna: so two very different perspectives. how should a new administration, whoever has it, engage russia in the next coming years? >> well, first of all you can't help but note both the candidates were pretty good at attack the other for probably the most inelegant and inopportune thing either one said on the subject. at one time governor romney did exaggerate calling russia our number one geostrategic foe. i don't see the argument for that. i also think president obama made the mistake with that open mic mistake back in korea earlier this year when he di
